Early day motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few EDMs are actually debated. Here are the two most important things you need to know about EDMs:
1. Signing an EDM will have no effect on the law: the purpose of EDMs is usually to get publicity for a particular cause or issue.
2. Julie is not able to sign EDMs, because she is a Parliamentary Private Secretary. If you write to or email Julie with a request to sign a particular EDM, she may write to the Minister concerned, normally with the wording of the EDM, to express her support and to urge him/her to take the action requested.
