   Julie in Parliament

On this page you can learn about Julie's parliamentary duties, find out how Julie can use Parliament to help you, and read Julie's most recent speeches and questions in the House of Commons. Videos to come soon too!

What does Julie do in Parliament?

Julie was elected on the 6th of May 2010 and made her first speech to Parliament on the 16th of June 2010 - you can watch or read her first speech here.

Julie is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Rail, Youth Affairs, Children, Community & Voluntary Sector and Save The Pub. Julie is a member of the Transport Select Committee and she has also been appointed as Chair of the all-party Rail in the North group of MPs.

Julie was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Yvette Cooper in her role as Shadow Women's and Equalities Minister in October 2010.

Julie was promoted to join the Whips office in June 2012, a poisition that she currently holds in addition to her numerous commitments in Parliament.

On top of all that, Julie speaks in Parliament every week to hold the Government to account on behalf of you, her constituents. You can click the links below to read Julie's recent speeches and questions in the House of Commons.

How Julie can use Parliament to help you

Julie can put a Minister on the spot by asking an oral question at Question Time one afternoon. Ministers answer questions at the despatch box on a rota basis and there is a limit to the number of questions which there will be time to ask, so this cannot necessarily be done on a given day.

Similarly, Julie can table a written question to the appropriate Government department. You can see the answers to written questions by clicking 'Written Answers' here.

Julie can also try to raise your problem in the half-hour Adjournment Debate, which is usually the last business of the day, although again there will be competition amongst MPs for the right to raise matters on adjournment and Julie must be successful in a ballot or have her subject chosen by the Speaker.

You may see campaigns, particularly online, which suggest you ask your MP to sign an Early Day Motion, or EDM. Click here to find out more about EDMs and how Julie can respond to them.

If you and other people feel strongly about a certain issue, you may decide to organise a petition to the House of Commons. Your petition can only be presented by an MP. You can download a factsheet here on how to set out a petition to Parliament, or watch the BBC's short film here.
